Wildebeest migration is a movement of wildebeest and other animals from one ecosystem to another. Hundreds of hundred thousand wildebeest migrate in Serengeti national park in a clockwise direction or circular motion that causes adrenaline-sensation (excitement) among tourists visiting from different parts of the world. This movement of wildebeest, zebras, antelopes, and other predators such as lions, is an exceptional wildlife activity in the Serengeti ecosystem. What months favors the grand wildebeest migration.

During this period, wildebeest migration are heading to southern Serengeti, mostly following the rain and greener and healthier pastures. Wildebeest migrates from Maasai Mara, Kenya towards Serengeti National Park, reaching the edge of Ngorongoro crater. January and February is called a period of “Calving”. More than eighty thousand calves are born in a day, and almost four hundred thousand are born in this period. Interesting fact is wildebeests calves can easily walk few hours after they are born and actively participate in the great migration. During the end of February to the beginning of March, thousands of wildebeest and their young babies will be crossing the Mara River to search for green pasture. Here, you will see the movement of hundred thousands of wildebeest, buffalos, zebras, and impalas, and other predators such as lions chasing the newly born wildebeest babies and praying on them. This time is favorable because the animals are migrating from dry area to greener and fertile land to look for fresh pasture. You will witness the action of predators chasing thousands of wildebeest groups, real action in place. Hundreds thousands of animals are eaten by predators and millions of them are born. Evidently, this is the circle of life. There is a lot of action that will fill your bucket list!

July, August, September and October, the great migration in action.

Wildebeest migration begins from Northern Serengeti, crossing the River Mara towards Maasai Mara in Kenya. Here, is where the action is phenomenal, and it is common to see herds of wildebeest, collectively crossing the River Mara and later returning to Northern Serengeti within few days later. Many say, this is the most favorable time to visit Serengeti National park due to the dramatic movement of the wildebeests and there is a lot of action from the first day you enter the park until the day you depart.
