Tanzania’s Mandatory Travel Insurance: What Visitors Need to Know

Planning a Tanzania safari or Zanzibar beach holiday? From 1 October 2026, mandatory inbound travel insurance applies to foreign visitors entering mainland Tanzania, subject to applicable exemptions. Zanzibar has its own inbound travel insurance requirement.

Coverage and Cost

The standard policy costs USD 44 per visitor and provides cover for up to 92 days, subject to the policy terms and conditions. It provides protection for medical emergencies and related assistance as specified by the relevant insurer.

Where to Purchase Your Policy

Purchase your policy through the official insurance portal corresponding to your first point of entry into Tanzania:

If your itinerary includes both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, you should not need to purchase duplicate policies for the same journey, provided your existing policy remains valid and applicable.

Important Exemptions

Qualifying residents of East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states are exempt from the mainland requirement. Zanzibar’s applicable requirements should be checked separately.
