The journey begins with an early morning pickup from your Zanzibar hotel for a transfer to the ferry terminal. You will board the 7:00 AM fast ferry to Dar es Salaam, a crossing that typically takes 90 minutes across the Zanzibar Channel. Upon arrival in Dar es Salaam, you will transfer
to the Dar es Salaam Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station to catch the electric train to Morogoro. This modern rail link significantly reduces travel time compared to traditional road transport. In Morogoro, your driver-guide will meet you for the drive to Mikumi National Park. After entering the park, you will enjoy an afternoon game drive through the Mkata Floodplain, with lunch served at a designated site within the park.
After breakfast, you will spend a comprehensive day exploring the diverse habitats of Mikumi. The park is renowned for its "Mkata Floodplain" which supports large herds of zebras, wildebeests, and impalas. You will have the opportunity to track lions, which are often found perched on termite mounds or in the branches of trees, and observe the resident elephant populations. Lunch will be served at a picnic site or a park lodge, followed by further exploration of the hippo pools, where large pods of hippos coexist with Nile crocodiles.
The morning begins with a visit to a nearby Maasai Boma (village) at 9:00 AM. This cultural excursion provides insight into the traditional customs, architecture, and daily life of the Maasai people living on the periphery of the park. Following the cultural tour, you will return to Mikumi National Park for an afternoon game drive. This session allows for the observation of species that may have been missed previously, such as the eland (the world's largest antelope) or the rare leopard. Lunch will again be provided within the park restaurant.
Following breakfast, you will depart from the Mikumi area by vehicle for the drive back to Dar es Salaam. This route offers a final glimpse of the Tanzanian countryside and the Uluguru Mountains. Upon arrival in Dar es Salaam, you will be dropped off at the ferry terminal for your return journey to Zanzibar. Once back on the island, a final transfer will take you from the Stone Town terminal to your respective hotel, concluding the safari.
