Nyerere National Park, formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve, is the largest national park in Tanzania and one of the largest faunal reserves in the world. Spanning approximately 30,893 square kilometers, it was renamed in 2019 to honor the founding father of Tanzania, Julius Nyerere. This vast ecosystem is characterized by the mighty Rufiji River, expansive miombo woodlands, and open grasslands that support a high density of "Big Five" wildlife and the continent's largest population of
endangered African wild dogs.
Your adventure begins with a morning flight from Zanzibar International Airport to Mtemere Airstrip. Upon arrival, you will be met by a professional guide and proceed immediately into the park for an introductory game drive. A picnic lunch will be served at a scenic vantage point within the park, allowing for uninterrupted wildlife viewing. You will continue exploring the diverse landscapes—ranging from wetlands to dry grasslands—until evening, when you transfer to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Following morning tea, you will embark on a comprehensive full-day game drive. This allows for deeper penetration into the park's interior, increasing the chances of spotting lions, leopards, and large herds of elephants and buffalo. A bush lunch will be served in the heart of the bush, surrounded by the sounds of the African wilderness. You will return to the lodge in the evening for relaxation and dinner.
The day starts at 6:30 AM with a guided walking safari, offering a unique perspective on animal tracking and local flora, then return to the lodge for having a breakfast. Afterward, you will visit a nearby Maasai village for a cultural tour to learn about traditional customs and lifestyles. Return to the lodge for lunch and refreshment. At 4:00 PM, head to the Rufiji River for a boat safari, where you can observe hippos,
crocodiles, and diverse birdlife at close range during sunset. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
After morning tea and checkout, enjoy a final half game drive in the park. This is an excellent opportunity to capture last-minute sightings of predators or rare species like the s wild dogs. Your guide will then transfer you to the airstrip in time for your scheduled flight back to Zanzibar, concluding your Tanzanian safari experience.
